Where should I set my Standby Power Unit?

Generac Standby Power Unit

This is a common question that we get when we visit a client’s home. There are a lot of things to consider when determining the right answer. Things to consider would be the aesthetics, the question of how close it can be to the house, a window, or other equipment, the noise production, and what will make it easier at installation and most cost effective. If you live in a sub-division, you may have an HOA to consider. Often times, the HOA will have parameters that need to be met and a site plan will have to be submitted. What about shrubbery? How close can the unit be to that azalea bush? And do I want it installed next to my bedroom?
Having a knowledgeable Sales Tech will help in answering those questions and arriving at the right spot for installation. In today’s environment, it might be tough to do an actual site visit. The site visit is optimal, but if it can’t be performed, we will request photos and ask for measurements of site. Maybe a virtual tour of the grounds if that is possible.
When we do come for our site visit, we will look for several things. If there is a natural gas meter or liquid propane tank, it’s more cost effective to install the unit in this area. It’s much cheaper to add electrical wires than to plumb for gas. Generac’s Smart Modules allow for the installation of the unit to be on the other side of the house from the electrical meter if that is necessary. If there isn’t already a gas or LP connection, we will look to see if we can get it all on the same side. So the next things to consider would be terrain and surface. It’s imperative that the unit be level to allow for the oil to run properly through the machine and for the engine to run at it’s best. We can custom build a pad or platform if it calls for it. If it’s a flat surface, a gen-pad is perfect and included in the price of the installation. Next we will consider the distance between items to allow for the national electrical code:

-5 feet away from a window, door, or vent

-3 feet of clearance in the front of the unit (The 3 feet of clearance includes shrubbery or vegetation)

-18 inches from the rear of the unit if against a fire resistant wall

-5 Feet overhead clearance

You also want to avoid areas with drainage issues, where snow would accumulate, or that have a sprinkler system. Additionally local code always has to be taken into consideration and trumps the national code. That is why we apply for a permit and get the inspection. Be wary of anyone who will install without getting a permit. Not getting the permit and going through an inspection can void any warranty from Generac.
And what about installing next to your bedroom? Generac is one of the quietest units on the market. It is about as loud as your AC unit or Heat Pump. If it’s a concern we will do our best to work around that. As you can see, it’s a process to determine the right spot. But that’s what a specialist is there to do- help you to make the right decision with your home or business in mind and what’s best for you.
