Are You Seeing Red? Don’t Be Alarmed!
If you have a generator, you are probably familiar with the dreaded red light and error code notifications.
Sometimes an error code can signal something major, but most times with remote monitoring, the code can be cleared and it can be determined to be something minor.
2800 Code
One error code we see a lot is error code 2800. This is common, but annoying. What does it mean? And what can you do if you get the 2800 error code?
If you have a 2800 error code, it typically means that the emergency shut off button on the back of the generator has been turned off. Unfortunately, this is one code that cannot be reset remotely. But it’s generally a simple fix.
What can cause that to happen? The number one culprit is the squirrel. The generator is a perfect item in the lawn to serve as their jungle gym. The toggle switch falls victim to their daily shenanigans more often than not.
Even the vibration of the generator can sometimes cause it to toggle into the off position. But since it’s a simple toggle switch, it can be turned back on easily. Then the code can be cleared by simply following the prompts on the generator’s controller.

But every once in a while, the unit will throw the 2800 error code, but the switch isn’t in the off position. What can that mean? The switch, because it is out in the elements, can be damaged. There may be a bad connection or a bad crimp. You might need a firmware update if your generator isn’t connected to wifi.
For all of those reasons, it’s good to be connected to a Certified Generator Service Technician. A technician can determine if it is something simple or more complicated.
If you are covered by a warranty, it may be something on Generac’s dime.
Having a Certified Technician that can work on your behalf will always help to take the worry out of seeing that red light on your generator.
